about

Matthew Herbert’s Accidental announces the digital reissue of John Matthias’ ‘Smalltown, Shining’ album on occasion of its 20th Anniversary.

The LP was originally released on CD and Vinyl LP in 2001 via Herbert’s Lifelike, later incorporated into Accidental’s family of labels.

Over the years John has appeared on albums by various artists and musical collaborations include his violin playing on Radiohead's 'The Bends’ (1994) and Matthew Herbert’s ‘Bodily Functions’(2001). He also collaborated with Coldcut on their 2006 album Sound Mirrors (Man in a Garage) and subsequently released a solo album ‘Stories from the Watercooler’ (2008) on the Ninja Tune label. John also released a third solo album, ‘Geisterfahrer’ (2014) on the Village Green label and was co-winner of the 2008 PRS New Music Award (The ‘Turner Prize for Music’).

‘Smalltown, Shining’ is a collaboration between John and producer Nick Ryan (who previously recorded as 'Silverkick' for Fused and Bruised records) and combines John's love of classic strong structures and live instrumentation with the loose grooves and dissonant arrangements of electronic music. The unique melding of styles is brought together by John's sublime vocals and the experimental but engaging production from Nick Ryan whose experience in sound innovation has led to many groundbreaking works such as The Fragmented Orchestra (Jane Grant, John Matthias and Nick Ryan - 2008/9)

The track ‘Talk To Me’ was produced by Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke who also appears on the track playing organ (the track was developed and mixed by Nick Ryan). Additional production work on the album comes courtesy of Richard Bell (Let’s give Delores One More Try) and Matthew Herbert (The Fire Engine, Three Chord Trick)

The unique cover artwork is by Stanley Donwood, well-known for his work on the Radiohead albums. He’s also designed a 12-page booklet for the CD with lyrics and more very special artwork and collaborated with John Matthias on the Stories From The Watercooler cover and the Overnormal exhibition in San Francisco in 2010.
